Gummy Smile

A gummy smile, known in medical terms as excessive gingival display, is when a smile displays too much gum tissue above the top teeth.

What is a gummy smile?

A gummy smile is where the upper teeth are overshadowed by excessive gum tissue and is visible when smiling.

Having a gummy smile isn’t an oral health concern, but many people with a gummy smile find it to be aesthetically displeasing and are embarrassed by it. Someone with a gummy smile may feel their teeth are smaller than normal, may be reluctant to smile, or even feel self-conscious about their smile.

There are many unpredictable factors that can result in a gummy smile to do with the teeth, the lips or the jaw.
